The Kern County Union School District voted 4–3 Tuesday to remove the United Farm Workers and labor organizer Cesar Chavez from its 5th-grade social studies curriculum, with board member Trent Macklin-Vasquez, 48, expressing concerns that the unit “encourages students to organize, which is something they could, in theory, also do here.” The 12-day unit, which had covered the 1965 Delano grape strike and the founding of the UFW, will be replaced by a worksheet about California agriculture featuring a word search containing the words SUN, GRAPE, and TRUCK. Asked whether the new materials would mention farmworkers at all, Macklin-Vasquez said the word “worker” was “still being evaluated” and added that “growers are also people, in a way.”
