The Bibb County Unified School Board voted 6–1 Tuesday evening to remove all references to the Reconstruction era from its 8th-grade U.S. history curriculum, citing concerns the material was “a little heavy for a Tuesday” and “honestly kind of a bummer to read after dinner.” The motion, introduced by board member Marcia Pelletier, 54, replaces approximately forty pages of textbook content with a single sidebar titled “Then Things Got Better, Mostly.”

Pelletier, a former assistant manager at a regional carpet outlet, defended the decision as “pro-kid” and noted that her own children had grown up “perfectly fine without knowing any of this stuff.” The sole dissenting member, substitute librarian Karen Ostroff, 61, asked during public comment whether anyone present had actually read the chapter under discussion. She received no response, was then asked to wrap up, and has not been seen since. A janitor sweeping the parking lot afterward said he saw “a lady with a tote bag” walking toward the interstate “with real purpose.”
