Iowa State Sen. Bethany Hoeger-Linn, 49, introduced legislation Monday requiring public school teachers to “present both sides” of any topic students or parents find “contested,” with no clarification offered as to what would qualify a topic as contested. Asked for examples, Hoeger-Linn cited “the Civil War, the moon, vaccines, and shapes.” The bill, SF-318, would empower any parent to file a complaint resulting in immediate teacher suspension pending a 90-day review by a three-person panel of “concerned community members.” Hoeger-Linn described the bill as “really just about fairness” and added, “I’m not saying the earth isn’t round. I’m saying who’s to say.”
