Louisiana State Rep. Earl Boudreaux, 61, introduced legislation Wednesday that would prohibit the use of the word “context” in any K-12 classroom, public library, or municipal meeting within state lines. Boudreaux, who described the word as “fancy” and “the kind of thing somebody says right before they tell you something you didn’t ask,” said the bill was a response to “an overall vibe.” The measure includes a $500 fine per use and creates a tip line for “context-adjacent language,” including the phrases “on the other hand” and “to be fair.” Asked whether the bill itself required context, Boudreaux paused for nine seconds and then asked the reporter to repeat the question.
