The Elkhart County Public Library system had its annual budget reduced by 71 percent this week after a county commissioner’s audit determined the system was in possession of “too many of the books.” Commissioner Roy Helmsdorfer, 62, described the holdings as “frankly, a lot,” and said the library’s collection of 412,000 volumes constituted “more reading than any one community could reasonably need.” The library will now operate with a collection cap of “around 60, give or take,” to be selected by a five-member panel that includes Helmsdorfer’s daughter-in-law. Head librarian Patrice Walloon, 49, submitted her resignation by email at 4:47 p.m. Friday with the subject line “okay.”
