Missouri Attorney General Carter Brillhart, 52, issued a subpoena Monday demanding that all public libraries in the state produce a complete list of every book checked out in calendar year 2023, including the names, ages, and home addresses of borrowers. Brillhart, who declined to specify the purpose of the request, described the inquiry as “a routine matter of public interest” and “not a list, per se.” When asked whether the request might have a chilling effect on library use, Brillhart said he “wasn’t familiar with that term” and asked the reporter to email him “in the form of a question, with footnotes.”
