The Bergen County Cooperative School District voted 5–2 Tuesday to remove the 1911 Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire from its 10th-grade U.S. history curriculum, with board member Doug Vandervort, 49, describing the event as “mostly a building code issue” and “the kind of thing OSHA pretty much handled later, from what I gather.” The 146 garment workers who died, the majority of them young immigrant women, will be replaced in the textbook by a sidebar titled “Stairwells: A Brief History.” Asked whether students would still learn why the stairwell doors had been locked from the outside, Vandervort said he “didn’t want to get into specifics” and that he had “a podiatrist appointment at four.” The local sprinkler-fitters’ union has requested a meeting and been placed on a waiting list.
