Local mother Tammy Birkenshaw, 47, addressed the Palm Beach County school board Tuesday to formally request the removal of “The Diary of a Young Girl” from middle school reading lists, citing what she described as a “real downer ending” and “honestly, just a lot.” Birkenshaw, who clarified she had read “most of the first part,” added that the book made her son Tyler “feel a certain way” and that “school should be about feeling good.” The book, written by a teenager in hiding during the Holocaust, has been challenged in 14 Florida districts this year. Birkenshaw concluded her two-minute comment by saying, “I’m not saying it didn’t happen. I’m saying it doesn’t have to keep happening to my Tyler.”
