The South Dakota Department of Education’s revised social studies framework, published Monday with no press release, removes all references to the federal Indian boarding school system from grades 4 through 12, replacing the unit with a one-paragraph entry titled “Schooling On The Plains, Generally.” Department spokesperson Carla Mettler-Schoonover, 46, attributed the change to concerns about “tone” and noted that the previous unit, which described forced family separations between 1879 and the 1960s, was “a lot for a Thursday morning.” Lakota educator Wíiyukčaŋ Brave Heart-Kallweit, 52, who served on the original review committee, said she had submitted twelve pages of revisions and received in return a single email reading “Thanks for your input.” She has since stopped opening the email.
