Sarasota County substitute teacher Mireille Vandersluis, 28, has been named a person of interest by district officials after reading aloud, verbatim, from a state-approved 7th-grade social studies textbook on Wednesday. The passage, which described the Japanese American internment of 1942 in three sentences and was followed by a comprehension question, was reported by a student to a parent who reported it to a state hotline. Vandersluis, in her second week on the job, said she had “literally just read the words on the page” and was unsure what else a person was supposed to do with a textbook. She has been advised by her union representative to limit future instruction to math.
